Area 81 Racing Turns a Corner at VIR and PITT

On July 25th Area 81 Racing began a 12 day road trip that would include stops at Virginia International Raceway and Pittsburgh International Race Complex for back to back FRP weekends.  Pitt was not on the original schedule, but a trip to Buffalo for Tim’s day job presented the opportunity to bookend a couple races.  The move paid dividends as the #81 JDR finished 3rd in both races and took a share of the Sonoco Hard Charger Award, in his first appearance at VIR with the new chassis.  Tim consistently turned lap times that improved his previous best by more than two seconds.

While the #81 was alone in 3rd most of the weekend at VIR, Pitt offered much more excitement.  During several sessions the entire F1000 field posted lap times within two seconds and the top 4 were within a second of one another.  In his first race ever at Pitt, Tim battled two competitors to move up from 6th to 4th and once again take the Sonoco Hard Charger Award.  He held 4th position firmly from start to finish after qualifying 4th in Race 2 on Sunday, but stayed in the mirrors of the 3rd position the entire race.

Tim Pierce, driver #81 – “What an adventure the last two weeks have been.  My Crew Chief, Denis Schembri, and I have worked very hard to get me comfortable in the car.  We’ve also found a setup that gives me confidence and the results are starting to show.  The field at Pitt was really tight and we had some exciting battles.  You couldn’t ask for more!

Pitt has a few blind turns and elevation changes, making it a demanding track to drive fast.  Alex Mayer, a National and Series Champion in F1000, was gracious enough to lend a few pointers that really helped.  He set’s the bar and it was a great feeling to see lap times getting closer to his.”

The team has moved into the top 4 in the championship and has a chance to move up with two weekends remaining.  With no time to waste, the series heads to Summit Point Raceway on August 23rd for Rounds 11 & 12.  Stay tuned for more updates.
